Meghalaya remains one of India's most underexplored regions, and this 6 days 5 nights trip from Guwahati is built around the state's signature experience — the 500-year-old Double Decker Living Root Bridge — alongside waterfalls, wild caving, and a plateau-edge village with views into Bangladesh. For NCR travellers, it's a genuine off-the-beaten-path circuit through one of the wettest places on Earth.
The trip opens in Shillong with Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak's panoramic views, and the colonial-era Ward's Lake, before moving to Cherrapunji (Sohra) — stopping at Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres, and the well-lit limestone formations of Mawsmai Cave. The physical centrepiece comes on Day 4: a descent of roughly 3,500 steps into the rainforest gorge at Nongriat to reach the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, a Khasi bio-engineering marvel formed by training aerial roots across two bridges, one above the other, with a natural swimming pool alongside. Day 5 shifts to Krem Chympe — a wild, unlit cave requiring headlamps and a willingness to get wet and muddy — followed by Nongjrong village on the edge of the Cherrapunji plateau, offering some of the most dramatic valley views in Northeast India.

Arrive at Guwahati Airport or Railway Station where your Pack & Go trip leader meets the group. Drive to Shillong (approx. 2.5–3 hours) through the winding hills of the Meghalaya plateau. Check in to your hotel in Shillong and spend the evening exploring Police Bazar — the city's lively commercial hub. Trip briefing and welcome dinner with the group.

A morning exploring Shillong's most scenic spots. Visit Elephant Falls — a three-tiered cascade tucked inside a forested gorge — before heading to Shillong Peak for a 360-degree view of the city and the surrounding Khasi Hills. Stop at Ward's Lake in the afternoon, a pleasant colonial-era garden lake in the heart of the city. Evening is free to explore Don Bosco Museum or browse the markets.

Drive to Cherrapunji (Sohra), one of the rainiest places on Earth, stopping at Nohkalikai Falls — India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 metres — where the water drops into a startlingly turquoise pool below. Visit the Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint and Mawsmai Cave, a well-lit limestone cavern with striking stalactite formations. Check in to your Cherrapunji hotel or resort with cloud-level valley views.

The physical centrepiece of the trip. Drive to Tyrna village and begin the descent to Nongriat — roughly 3,500 steps down into the rainforest gorge. The Double Decker Living Root Bridge is a 500-year-old marvel of Khasi bio-engineering, where two bridges have been trained from the aerial roots of rubber trees, one above the other. Swim in the natural pool beside the bridge before the climb back up. A moderately strenuous 4–5 hour round trip — but one that rewards every step.

Today ventures into Meghalaya's cave country. Krem Chympe is a wild, unlit cave system requiring headlamps and a spirit of adventure — wade through shallow streams, crawl through narrow passages, and marvel at the geological formations inside. After the cave, drive to Nongjrong village perched right on the edge of the Cherrapunji plateau, offering one of the most dramatic valley views in Northeast India — on a clear day the plains of Bangladesh are visible in the far distance.

Morning at leisure in Cherrapunji or Shillong for last-minute souvenir shopping — look for Meghalaya's distinctive cane and bamboo crafts, local honey, and lakadong turmeric. Drive back to Guwahati Airport or Railway Station for your onward journey. Your trip leader does a final debrief en route.

Meghalaya had been on my radar for years and this trip completely lived up to the hype. The Double Decker Root Bridge is genuinely one of the most extraordinary things I've seen in India — and the swim in the natural pool after the trek felt incredible. The cave on Day 5 was also surprisingly thrilling. Very well organised by Pack & Go.
The Nongjrong viewpoint moment is the kind of thing you take photos of but they never do it justice. The group was wonderful — 12 of us from different cities and we all clicked immediately. Our trip leader was brilliant, knew the region really well and kept things moving without ever feeling rushed. Would go back to explore more of Northeast.
Loved almost every part of this trip. One honest note — the Root Bridge trek is genuinely hard on the way back up, so go in prepared. But standing at the bridge itself made every step worth it. Cherrapunji's landscape is unlike anything in North India — the cliffs and cloud valleys feel like a different country. Great value for the price.
