The itinerary opens in Jaipur with the City Palace, still home to the royal family, followed by Hawa Mahal's honeycomb facade and the working sundials of Jantar Mantar. Day two adds Amer Fort's mirrored Sheesh Mahal, Jal Mahal floating on Man Sagar Lake, and sweeping city views from Nahargarh Fort. The trip then moves to Jodhpur, where Mehrangarh Fort rises 120 metres above the blue-painted old city — one of India's largest forts and home to a museum tracing the Rathore dynasty through royal costumes, weapons, and palanquins. The final leg reaches Jaisalmer via Umaid Bhawan Palace and the Jaisalmer War Memorial, arriving in time for sunset at Gadisar Lake. The last full day covers Sonar Qilla, the living Jaisalmer Fort still home to around 3,000 residents, the intricately carved Patwon Ki Haveli, and a camel safari across Sam Sand Dunes with dinner and folk music at a desert camp under open skies.

Arrive at Jaipur airport or railway station by noon and transfer to your hotel. After freshening up, begin with the City Palace — still home to the royal family of Jaipur, with impressive museums, decorated corridors and working artisan workshops inside the complex. Follow with a stop at the iconic five-storey Hawa Mahal facade and then Jantar Mantar, the 18th-century astronomical observatory with giant sundials still accurate to the minute. If time allows, head to the Birla Mandir before returning to the hotel.

Post-breakfast, drive up to Amer Fort — the hilltop seat of the Kachwaha Rajputs, with its grand Diwan-i-Aam and beautifully mirrored Sheesh Mahal. On the way back, pause at Jal Mahal for photos of the palace sitting in the middle of Man Sagar Lake. Continue to Nahargarh Fort perched above the city for panoramic views over Jaipur — the café at the top makes for a good late-afternoon stop. Evening is free for Bapu Bazaar and Johari Bazaar for textiles, gems and blue pottery.

Leave Jaipur after breakfast by 9 AM and drive roughly 5 hours to Jodhpur. On arrival, head straight to Mehrangarh Fort — one of the largest forts in India, rising 120m above the blue-painted city below. The museum inside traces the history of the Rathore rulers through weapons, palanquins and royal costumes. Just outside the fort walls, Jaswant Thada is a serene marble cenotaph worth a quiet 20 minutes. End the evening browsing the busy lanes around the Ghanta Ghar clock tower at Sardar Market.

Morning visit to Umaid Bhawan Palace — built between 1928 and 1943, it remains one of the world's largest private residences, with part of it functioning as a heritage hotel and museum. Drive 5 hours to Jaisalmer, stopping at the Jaisalmer War Memorial which documents the Indian Army's campaigns in this frontier region. Arrive in the Golden City by evening and head straight to Gadisar Lake for the sunset — the sandstone ghats and arched gateway reflected in the water make for a memorable first impression of Jaisalmer.

Morning at Sonar Qilla — the Jaisalmer Fort, one of the world's few living forts where around 3,000 people still reside inside its walls. The yellow sandstone glows amber in morning light. Walk through narrow lanes to Patwon Ki Haveli, a 19th-century mansion with five connected havelis showcasing intricate jharokha windows and gold-leaf paintings. After lunch, drive to Sam Sand Dunes, check into your desert camp, and saddle up for a camel safari across the Thar as the sun turns the dunes orange. Dinner and cultural folk music at camp under an open sky.

After a relaxed breakfast at the desert camp, pack up and drive 4-5 hours back to Jodhpur. You will be dropped at Jodhpur airport or railway station for your onward journey. Book your return flight or train departing after 4 PM to be comfortable.

Took my family on this trip in November and Rajasthan delivered completely. Mehrangarh Fort was the best fort I have seen in India — the views of the blue city from the top are incredible. Desert camp on Day 5 was the highlight for my kids.
Jaisalmer Fort in the morning with almost no tourists was magical. The camel safari at Sam Dunes at sunset with folk music at camp afterwards — that evening is hard to describe. Very well organised by Pack & Go.
Good coverage of all three cities without feeling rushed. Amer Fort on Day 2 was a bit crowded but still impressive. The Jodhpur to Jaisalmer drive through the desert landscape is something else entirely — keep the windows down.
