After freshening up, start with Umaid Bhawan Palace — built on the city's highest point between 1928 and 1943, part of it is now a heritage hotel and museum open to visitors. Head to Mehrangarh Fort next, the massive hilltop fortress that looms over Jodhpur's blue-painted old city, with beautifully decorated corridors narrating the Rathore dynasty's history. Just outside its walls, Jaswant Thada is a peaceful white marble cenotaph worth a quiet stop. Wind down the evening exploring the busy lanes around the Sardar Market clock tower for local snacks and handicrafts.

After breakfast, drive roughly 5 hours through the Thar landscape to Jaisalmer. En route, stop at the Jaisalmer War Memorial which documents the Indian Army's role in border campaigns through photographs, artefacts and exhibits. By afternoon, check into your desert Swiss tent camp at Sam Sand Dunes. Saddle up for a camel ride across the dunes as the sun begins to set, turning the sand from gold to deep amber. The ruins of homes and temples stand largely intact, giving it an eerie, time-frozen quality unlike any regular monument. Head back to Jaisalmer and spend the morning inside Sonar Qilla — the living Jaisalmer Fort whose yellow sandstone walls genuinely glow in sunlight, with thousands of residents still living inside. Walk to Patwon Ki Haveli for its intricate five-mansion complex covered in mirror-work and carved balconies. Catch the evening at Gadisar Lake as the light softens over the water and the sandstone ghats.

Post-breakfast, pack up and drive back 5 hours to Jodhpur. You will be dropped at Jodhpur airport or railway station for your onward journey. Book your return flight or train after 4 PM to be comfortable with the drive.

Did this over a long weekend in December and it was perfectly paced. Mehrangarh Fort is genuinely impressive — the view of Jodhpur's blue houses from the top is worth the trip alone. Kuldhara was an unexpected highlight, very eerie and interesting.
The camel safari at sunset in Sam Dunes was the best part. Swiss tent camp was comfortable and the folk music at night was a lovely touch. Jaisalmer Fort next morning with almost no crowds was something else.
Good compact trip if you have only 4 days. Patwon Ki Haveli is more impressive than it looks in photos — the detail is extraordinary. Would have liked a bit more time in Jaisalmer but overall very well managed.
